Earlier, his parents wanted him to pursue a law career. Gates was small for his age and was bullied as a child. Bill was a great thinker. He used to stay in his room where he would shout “I’m thinking” . When his mother asked what he was doing.
“There was always a reward for winning and there was always a penalty for losing”.
When he grew up, his parents enrolled him at Lakeside School, Seattle, Washington. Bill Gates was very good in study, he was very fond of reading since childhood. He used to read books in the context of school for hours, and also used to read Encyclopedia.
In 1969, Bill started his high school studies, this was the period when humans first went to the moon.
This mission was accomplished with the help of computer. At the same time, a company called Seattle gave Lakeside School. Its computer for students to learn and know about it.
Bill was a curious student, eager to know anything. And that’s why he got his admission in computer class, and soon Bill’s interest in computers started growing.
He was always curious to know how this computer works. So he started spending more and more time in computer class.
When Bill met Paul Allen – Magical Journey
One day Bill Gates met Paul Allen, Allen was two years older than him. There behavior was different from each other. Where Alan was very shy and very calm, Bill’s nature was unlike him. But they both became friends, as their ideas and perceptions were matched regards to computers.
And at that time no one could think that one day these two will change this world. By bringing a revolution in the computer world.
In 1972, when Bill Gates was 17 years old. He co-created a computer program called Traf-o-Data on the Intel 8008 processor with Paul Allen. Which measured traffic flow in Seattle city. And for this they got $ 20,000, which was their first earning. And with this, Bill entered the world of technology.
In 1972, when Bill was only 17 years old, he started thinking about opening his own company with Alan.
But Bill’s parents insisted him to get admitted in college after finishing his high school. His father was a prominent lawyer and wanted Bill also to study law.
In 1973 bills completed his high school. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT). On which his parents were very happy and they got the bill admitted to Harvard University in 1973.
His parents wanted him to study Law, but Bill Gates had a different dream.
Nevertheless, he thought very carefully about making a career in law. But he did not find any such subject in it, as much as interested as computer. And that’s why he used to spend more and more of his time at Harvard Computer Center.
In December 1974 , Allen saw the cover page of Popular Electronics magazine. In which the world’s first mini-computer kit, the MITS Altair 8800 was announced.
Alan went to Bill and told him everything. After this, both of them were very happy. Because they knew that if this computer will enter into the market. Then every person in the world would be able to use it to make their work easier.
The Altair 8800 was built in New Mexico by an Ed Roberts company.
Robbers the owner of the company. Was looking for such a person who could make such software that could run this computer.
Now these two had a great opportunity to shine their fortunes, and this is the reason they contacted with this company.
They make sure that they are working as a program of basic software that will run the Altair computer. And after that they both worked day and night at Harvard Computer Center for two months and made a software.
In 1975 Paul Allen went to test the software. The software started working when it was installed in the Altair 8800.
And this was the best moment of their life. Which had a historical impact on the computer world, after that he decided not to stop.
On April 4th, 1975 at the age of just 19, Bill Gates together with Paul Allen founded the Microsoft company. And started working together with Mr. Roberts Company.
Allen named their partnership “Micro-Soft”, a combination of “microcomputer” and “software“, and their first office was in Albuquerque. The first employee Gates and Allen hired was their high school collaborator Ric Weiland. They dropped the hyphen within a year and officially registered the trade name “Microsoft“. With the Secretary of the State of New Mexico on November 26, 1976. Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies.
And soon after, the consumption of digital computers increased so much that Bill Gates decided to left his studies before the final years. He had talked over this decision with his parents, who were supportive of him after seeing how much he wanted to start his own company.
He explained his decision to leave Harvard: “if things hadn’t worked out, I could always go back to school. I was officially on leave.”
But in the initial stages, Bill and Allen had to face a lot of trouble, a culture started to become popular with the computer purchaser.
In which people were buying personal computer but used to share information and software with each other.
And that’s why no one had any interest in buying software.
But Bill and Alan were very much involved in making this software so they felt bad about it.
Bill’s Request Letter to Users
In 1976, Bill wrote a letter to people interested in computers. Saying that without buying any software using it will to stop the new software to come in the market.
But it had no effect on the people, which disappointed Bill Gate. But his sharpness was not only in making software. He was also very smart, he knows how to grow the business and take the company to the top.
He used to manually check the code created by the employee and remove the error from it.
Due to his hard work, the company’s growth was increasing equally as compared to other hardware making companies like Apple, Intel and IBM.
Microsoft started expanded the new software into different languages and started selling its products to other computer manufacturers.
By the end of 1978, sales of these software would have exceeded 1 million,
And between 1978 and 1981, there was astonishing development and in a very short time, the company’s employees increased from 13 to 128 employees.
Microsoft with IBM
In November 1980, an opportunity came to the Microsoft company that changed it’s fortunes, the world’s largest computer maker, IBM, offered them to make software for its new computer.
This was a great opportunity for Bill and Alan and then they made a Ms-Dos, a new computer software for IBM. They (IBM company) wanted to buy the source code of this software for 50,000 dollars. But Bill Gate was a very clever businessman, he did not accept this proposal of IBM.
Because they wanted to earn from each & every sales of computer which has installed Microsoft’s software in it. And that’s why IBM had to pay Microsoft a license fee on every computer sale.
The press quickly identified Microsoft as being very influential on the IBM PC. PC Magazine asked if Gates was “the man behind the machine?”.
In the same market, more companies also came that sold computers at a cheaper rate than IBM and Microsoft started selling their software to them also.
In 1981 Bill gates became the president of Microsoft company or Paul Allen became the executive vice president.
By 1983, Microsoft’s business grown from $ 4 million to $ 16 million. Out of all the personal computers in the world, 30% of computers were run by Microsoft company software.
Bill Gates was at the age of just 28, reached the pinnacle of fame, the demand for computer software made by Bill and Allen was kept growing all over the world.
Unfortunate Separation from Paul Allen
Paul Allen had a serious illness that came under the category of cancer, although after a year Paul slowly started recovering. He could no longer participate in Microsoft’s daily work and so he left Microsoft and that was the end of the partnership between Bill and Allen.
Bill became the sole face of Microsoft, In 1984. And with his persistent efforts and perseverance, in 1985 his company did the business more than $140 million.
In 1986, Bill launched the new product of Microsoft company, Ms-window into the market for the first time. In which any one can use the computer easily by using a mouse.
Bill Gates made the company public, In 1986. Which gave the Microsoft company a new financial and creative base, and Bill kept 45% of the total stock with him. Which made him a billionaire at the age of 31.
When Microsoft lost his biggest Customer – IBM
Bill gates was one of the youngest billionaires in 1987, but this year Microsoft had to face a lot of big crisis, because the IBM replaced Microsoft’s software with its own software OS/2 and excluded Microsoft from the program. But Bill never gave up, after losing his biggest customer of his company and started upgrading Microsoft windows.
In 22 May 1990, Microsoft launched a new software, Ms Window 3.0 and at the same time, Bill also reduced the rate of Microsoft products.
His only motive behind this was that no other company could stand in front of him, and that is was the reason that IBM’S OS/2 software became a failure in the market. Microsoft Wind 3.0 became the best-selling window software.
More Bad moments & struggle of Microsoft
In 1993 bad times still did not end with Microsoft because the same year the Microsoft company was subjected to some legal investigation by the Department of Audit.
The Microsoft company was found to be charging a license fee as a charge based on the total number of computers sold by the computer manufacturer, even if Microsoft software is not installed in them.
In July 1994, Microsoft Company had to stop charging this, by agreeing with the Department of Justice and then the case was also closed by the Department of Justice.
